A focused pilgrimage to the heart of Ethiopian history. Fly north to Lalibela to explore the magnificent rock-hewn churches, a UNESCO World Heritage site carved 800 years ago. Customize your experience with a mountain hike to Mount Asheton or a countryside drive to the ancient cave church of Yemrehanna Kristos.
Fly to Lalibela (approx. 1 hour north of Addis). We immediately begin our tour of the UNESCO World Heritage site, exploring the magnificent monolithic structures carved directly into the stone. We explore the maze of passageways, tunnels, and intricate reliefs of the first group of churches.

Morning Choice: Take a hike (with mules) to the 13th-century rock-hewn monastery of Mount Asheton for spectacular views, OR drive to Yemrehanna Kristos, a beautiful built-up church inside a cave that predates Lalibela. In the afternoon, we return to town to tour the second group of churches.

We take a short flight back to Addis Ababa. Depending on your departure time, enjoy an optional half-day city tour. The trip concludes with a traditional evening cultural dinner before your transfer to the airport.
