Ethiopia is a premier destination for ornithologists, boasting over 850 documented species, including 16 endemics found nowhere else on earth. This 4-day expedition takes you through the thorny bushes of Awash and the aquatic havens of the Rift Valley lakes to spot rare, migratory, and endemic birdlife.
We depart Addis Ababa for the lowlands of Awash National Park. The park's thorny bushes host over 380 species. Our focus today is on magnificent birds of prey, including the Martial Eagle, Secretary Bird, Gabar Goshawk, and various Vultures (Lappet-faced, Ruppell’s Griffon).

After an early breakfast and final birding in Awash (looking for the Abyssinian Roller and Kori Bustard), we drive 260km south to Langano. We stop at Koka Dam for water birds and spend the afternoon at Lake Ziway. The woodland near the lake offers sightings of Black-headed Batis, Beautiful Sunbirds, and the water itself teems with Pelicans, Ibis, and Gulls.

We visit the Abijata-Shalla National Park, a critical nesting site for thousands of flamingos and pelicans. We expect to see migratory species like Marsh Harriers and African Fish Eagles. The surrounding acacia woodland is home to the Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Von der Decken's Hornbill, and Lilac-breasted Rollers. We end the day at a tranquil eco-lodge near Langano.

Early morning birding around Langano, one of the best sites in the country. We look for the endemic Yellow-fronted Parrot, Banded Barbet, and Spotted Eagle Owl. We then begin our drive back to Addis Ababa, enjoying final views of aquatic birds at the Rift Valley lakes. We conclude with a farewell cultural dinner before your airport transfer.
